No workplace has escaped the touch of technology, including nursing. Nursing is still, and will always be, a field where technology has had a huge impact on the way that nurses do their job. While some of the technological advances have made the nurse’s job easier, others have been implemented as a price saving measure, and still others are used to improve patient safety.

Like those in other industries, nurses are often reluctant of using new technologies. With the desire to remain within the process they are familiar with, nurses are often unwillingly pulled into newer technologies. Like most others, once they become familiar with new technology, they grow to like it. One side effect of the new technological advancements in healthcare is the increase in jobs related to the field. Before ultrasounds, there was no need for someone trained to perform them. Respiratory therapy, nuclear medicine and many other branches of healthcare have created new jobs by the advancement of technology.

Improvements in medical care

Advancements in technology have lead to improved healthcare and patient care. Before the development of electronic IV monitors and IV pump infusions, anyone who received an IV had it administered under the watchful eye of a nurse. Because manual IVs were susceptible to stopping or flowing too rapidly, a nurse remained by the patient’s side every time they received an IV. As important as nursing care is for the patient, it is only one part of the nurse’s job. The nurse is responsible for maintaining an accurate record on each patient under her care. While many hospitals continue to use pen and paper charting, technology can make the record keeping process less cumbersome. There are computerized programs available for medication dispensing, hospital occupancy and insurance and payment programs. Patient records can be maintained in a computerized database which allows the physician, nurse or other medical professional to pull up the patient’s medical history in seconds. Portable computing equipment allows the nurse to update the information on the fly, rather than at the end of each shift. Internet access allows medical personnel to have instant access to databases to search for symptoms and drug interactions.

Reducing the risk of mistakes

Computerized drug management software reduces the chances of a patient receiving the wrong drug, or being given two drugs that should not be given together. Portable defibrillators only work when they are needed and properly applied. Many of the improvements in technology are aimed at reducing the risk of errors and mistakes that can lead to injury or death. This not only makes the hospital a safer place for patients, but helps ease the stress nurses and other medical professionals are under.

Technology and the nurse

As the nursing field becomes more specialized, the need for nurses that are comfortable with new technology will only increase. My Home Improvement Project
I have been a part of many home improvement projects over the years and my most recent project was a four bedroom detached house located in Warrington. The idea started off as we would do the house up and sell it on for a profit. This is what my dad and I do in our spare time if you like. So we started work as we usually do and slowly the house took shape and I mean it really took shape. It truly did look spectacular when it was finished. However there were two problems;
1.We didnt want to sell it 2.We couldnt sell it if we wanted to
The house, although fantastic, would never fetch a fantastic price due to competition in the area. Our house is the biggest on the street and the only detached house as well but everyone seemed more interested in buying the house that is semi detached and slightly smaller and saving some money. So we decided to keep the house and truly turn it into a work of art.
How to personalize a house to make it a home
Well we where no longer selling the house so we could use a color scheme that we wanted. We had chocolate coloured furniture and the whole house including the kitchen and sofas followed this colour scheme so we decided that we could paint the walls a really dark crme colour which looked a lot better than boring white! Next we had to job of converting the garage into something of more value than a garage (the house was at the very end of the street so we had the whole road and the driveway to park in) as this seemed null and void to us.
This was a time consuming job but once it was done it truly did look amazing. The hardest part of this mini project if you like was changing the position of the door so you could go into the “mans den” from the hall rather than from the kitchen due to a long story and some unfortunate accidents along the way.
Now it was accessory time we bought a home entertainment system for the living room and mans den installed clapper lights in the bedrooms which where awesome and many more bits and bobs. Once this was done I was border line thinking about bumping off the old man just to have the house to myself (joking).
However we werent quite done. I looked at the French patio doors leading to the garden and a brainwave hit. My dad and I dont usually go for conservatories for a variety of reasons including price, profit margin and time. This meant the thought had never occurred to me, lets get a conservatory.
The conservatory project took four weeks and a lot of the work was outsourced. Once the piling was finished we thought the rest of the work would take no time at all but it turned out the opposite to be true. But once it was done I can honestly say that I was ready to buy my dad out and thats what I did (still paying him off!) and it was worth every penny.

You made the decision to build a chain link fence. You have the posts set. You even figured out how to get the rail ends on and have the top rail in place. Now its time to put the bottom tension wire on. No matter how hard you try or how hard you pull the wire, you just cant seem to get it taut.

The common cable used as bottom tension cable on chain link fencing is a 9 gauge galvanized wire. It usually comes in rolls of 170? or more. The wire is thick, heavy, and is difficult to stretch. Here is a simple way to tighten the wire, and all you need is a pair of pliers. Start by attaching one end of the wire at a terminal post (also known as an end post or corner pole). Put the wire through the brace band and wrap it around its self a few times. It is not recommended to try and pinch the wire in the brace band to secure it. Reel the cable out along the fence line.

Cut the cable a couple feet past the next terminal post you are securing it to. Walk the fence line again and make sure the tension wire has no kinks, is not caught on any roots or under growth, and get out as many of the loops (caused by it being spooled) as you can. Take the free end of the tension cable and thread it through the brace band at the terminal post you are going to attach too. Pull the cable as tight as you can get it, and wrap it around itself a few times as you did at the first pole.

The wire should be fairly tight, but may push away from the poles about a foot. Tighten your brace bands. Take your pliers (lineman pliers work best) and grab the tension cable with the pliers by either one of the terminal poles. With a firm grip, twist the pliers to the left or right. The tension cable will form a z were you twisted. Work your way down the fence line twisting the tension wire in this matter at every pole.

You will notice the farther you work down the line, the harder the wire is to twist. This is due to the wire getting tighter and less slack being able to be twisted. Put as many twists in the wire as needed to achieve the tension you desire.

This is a simple way to tighten bottom tension cable and make sure the bottom of your chain link fence is secure.

Homeowners planning on interior painting often struggle over the issue of trim color during the planning process. Often they plan wall colors, on account of what they have seen in a magazine or while visiting a friend’s home. Maybe they have a particular fabric in mind and want to match a color in the fabric for the walls in that room. Anyway, the problem arises with what to do with the trim for that room. Is it possible to use a different trim color than the existing trim being used in other areas of your home?

While there is no absolute rule about trim color, that if broken, would cause you to be arrested by the color scheme patrol, there are some things you should consider.

1. The trim and ceilings of your home are what establishes a unified look and feel throughout your home. You can change your walls to any color that you like, or that fits with the theme you have planned for the interior of your home. The use of one color on the trim and ceilings will give you a smooth transition between wall colors as you travel throughout your home. Without this consistency, your home takes on a feeling of disunity.

2. White trim and some off-white colors will go with any wall color. That is why it is so popular. It gives you much greater flexibility in interior color coordination and design. Deciding to paint your trim a color other than white will limit your decorating options; however, I have seen some marvelous color co ordinations while using more color for trim.

If you really want to change the color of the trim for a particular room, then test the color. Try to get a feel for how it will impact the rooms or halls adjacent to that room. Will it be completely separated by a door? Will the door be closed most of the time? If the room is open to other areas of the house that are easily seen, how will that impact the color theme for the other parts of your home? You don’t want to put a lot of time and effort into painting a room if in the long run you’re not happy with how it makes the rest of your home look. Test the color on a door jamb or baseboard and then stand back and get a feel for what it does for unity of passage from other rooms to that room. It would be a good idea to wait a few days to see if you grow tired of the transition between colors. Often what we initially think looks good, loses its appeal over time.
